Obsession takes over the world becoming the highest grossing horror movie of all time
Are we sure the One Wish Willow is pretend? because Curry Barker seems to have done some magic with Obsession, with just a $750k budget this film goes to show the importance of talent over funding.
I think it’s safe to say everyone has heard something about Obsession, whether its the comeback of “uncanny valley makeup”, sneak peaks of the restaurant scene, or people gathering in the parking lot talking about what the hell they just witnessed, you cannot escape the discourse of this film.
Obsession is one of those films that changes the way we look at cinema. Curry Barker told The Hollywood Reporter that he was offered 2 million dollars to rewrite Obsession where Bear redeems himself and becomes a hero. Some people would have snatched this up in a heartbeat but Barker stood his ground and made the movie he wanted to make saying the film would’ve been “boring” if he’d done what they wanted him to do. Money doesn’t make the film good, creativity, originality, and a good team does. This movie takes us into a new wave of cinema proving that Gen Z want original movies and films with substance.
It seems that every other trailer in theatres is either a sequel, a remake, or a live action adaptation. The people are bored. Bring on the new, younger, filmmakers. Barker is only 26 years old and has certainly made his mark. Director of the Backrooms, Kane Parsons was 19 years old when filming began, yet another huge hit.
Obsession doesn’t only have a genius story, it is also beautifully made. The lighting is classic for horror, making great use of shadows and there is a theme with Nikki Freeman (the amazing Inde Navarrette) often having a glisten in her eyes even when in the dark.
Certain shots are used repeatedly in a very clever way. When in a car, the window is often on full display really adding to the unease of it all. You find yourself looking around waiting for something to happen, this is so effective in one terrifying jump scare, but I won’t spoil it for you!
The score by Rock Burwell is a masterpiece in music theory using chromatics to show unease.
I fully believe this is one of the scariest films I’ve seen, less than halfway through I couldn’t fathom there being any more of the film to go because it had already hit so hard. They use the ups and downs of the scares very effectively, Barker gets you to think you can breathe for a second before hitting you with another scare before the air fills your lungs. Obsession does actually have some humourous moments however, though this wont surprise some viewers who know Curry Barker and Cooper Tomlinson from their comedy careers with “thats a bad idea”. Fun Fact to finish on: This name is where “Tabi Cat” comes from, the company in Obsession who make the One Wish Willows! The voice of whom is also voiced by Barker.
Obsession is still in theatres and I truly recommend seeing it on the bug screen while you can, it has been a while since I’ve heard audible reactions in an audience and it does add to the experience. If you can’t get there Obsession is available to rent or buy now!
