Help! Here comes a new biopic and it’s really something!
Jacob Fortune-Lloyd is Brian Epstein in Joe Stephanson’s truly beautiful Midas Man.
Wow. This film left me with my jaw on the floor. As a huge Beatles fan this movie was excellent, I not only learnt more about how they rose to fame but I feel closer to them and Brian Epstein than ever before. I wasn’t sure how I’d like this movie because I don’t always like biopics, the recent Back to Black really wasn’t for me but Bohemian Rhapsody was just stunning, however I adored this.
What I think makes this movie so brilliant is the 4th wall breaks, throughout the movie Fortune-Lloyd has bits to camera where he tells the viewer exactly what’s happening. It’s a great way to keep us up to date as to where we are without having to go into so much detail. We don’t need to witness every concert The Beatles played all around the world but it’s crucial for us to know it’s happening so they use a beautiful bit of cinematography to show this. As a film studies student I really nerded out to this!
Casting directors Gillian Hardie, Daniel Hubbard and Rory Okey smashed it out the park with this one, The Beatles look uncanny to their counterparts, aside from Jonah Lees as John Lennon being quite short in comparison to the others, funny how close their names are, they look almost identical to the classic 4. I saw Blake Richardson’s audition to be Paul McCartney and I can clearly see why he got the role. Cilla Black isn’t as recognisable but Darci Shaw was still excellent in her role. I’ve never seen Jacob Fortune-Lloyd in anything before but I’m sure he’s going to be wanted for many many things after this outstanding performance.
As I’m sure you’d expect, the score and soundtrack are beautiful. They sound exactly like The Beatles, Jonah Lees posted a TikTok from the recording studio and his guitar and vocals are superb.
Whether you’re a Beatles fan or not this movie is a top for 2024 and will leave you in shock, with a heartbreaking ending Midas Man is a cinematic masterpiece. I sense some awards being won for this one!
